Mullin tried a header when Bishop challenged him outside the box in the 11th minute and both went down. Mullin immediately grabbed his head with his right hand and his left thigh with his left hand and was clearly in pain. He lay down for about seven minutes. A stretcher and cart were brought in and Mullin was surrounded by medical personnel, but he eventually got up and walked slowly with assistance, wearing an oxygen mask.
Manager Phil Parkinson called it a minor puncture and said the team did not know how long Mullin would be out of action. Ryan Reynolds, who owns the Wrexham club with actor Rob McElhenney, tweeted that Paul Mullin puts the last drop of blood into everything he does and that the whole Wrexham community wishes him a speedy recovery.
Paul Mullin’s injury is a huge blow for Wrexham
‘Obviously it’s a big blow for us,’ Parkinson said after Wrexham’s 3-1 win at San Diego’s Snapdragon Stadium in front of a record crowd of 34,248 in the third of four matches on their US tour. Injuries are part and parcel of soccer and we need to deal with them together and we will come out of the game stronger.
The regular season for the Welsh club, recently promoted to the fourth tier of English soccer, will begin on August 5.
Bishop was unhurt, but after the collision he was booed every time he touched the ball.
I’m furious, Parkinson said
