Midway through the second half, the visitors should have doubled their lead, but the usually lethal Erling Haaland shot from close range under the crossbar and then dispatched the rebounded ball into the net.
That miss proved decisive as out of nowhere Chris Wood, who signed for Forest in January, equalized with six minutes to go and blew the roof off a damp City Ground with a shot from the far post.
The champions threw everything they had at Forest in search of a dramatic late winner, but were unable to break down the hosts’ resistance, leaving City two points behind Arsenal with one more game to play. Forest moved up to 13th place.
