Tebas repeated in various interviews with Brazilian TV channels that he regretted his comments, saying they were untimely and misunderstood.
Immediately after Sunday’s incident, Tebas criticized Vinicius Júnior for attacking the Spanish league and claimed that the Real Madrid star did not show up for talks on racism, which he himself had requested.
Now the Spanish executive regrets his comments.
Vinicius Júnior was subjected to racist taunts from Valencia fans during Real Madrid’s 1-0 defeat in the Spanish championship on Sunday, and he has complained about similar insults in the past.
I have to say I was wrong, Tebas told TV Globo. I have to apologize and ask for forgiveness for that tweet. We love Vinicius and we went to the courts, it’s been a long time. We are dealing with it, we want to protect Vinicius and we will continue to do so.
If that tweet was misinterpreted, which it undoubtedly was because a lot of people took it differently, I owe you an apology. And nothing else, Tebas added.
After Tebas’ tweet on Sunday, Vinicius responded.
Instead of criticizing racists, the league president shows up on social media to attack me, Vinicius Jr. said. I’m not your friend to talk to you about racism. I want action and punishment.
The Brazilian player did not immediately respond to Tebas’ apology.
