Now at age 31, he will join a host of other top soccer stars in Saudi Arabia as the oil-rich kingdom embarks on an impressive effort to raise the profile of its league.
I have always played for big teams, now I am at Al Ahly, Firmino said in a video posted by the club on Twitter to announce his signing.
Al Ahly, based in Jeddah, has already signed former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy this offseason.
This is one of four teams that recently came under the ownership of the kingdom’s sovereign investment fund.
Other Saudi Pro League teams have signed stars such as Karim Benzema, N’Golo Kante, Kalidou Koulibaly and Marcelo Brozovic. Cristiano Ronaldo started this trend by moving to Al-Nassr in January.
Firmino won the Champions League, the Premier League, the FA Cup and the English League Cup with Liverpool. Other titles include the Club World Cup and the European Super Cup.
As a member of the Brazilian national team, he won the Copa America in 2019.
Al Ahly has not announced how long Firmino’s contract is for.
