Land scored his record 27th Premier League goal of the season.
The reign of new Leeds manager Javi Gracia began with a vital 1-0 victory over Southampton, when Junior Firpo’s goal broke a 10-match winless streak and propelled the team into 17th place.
West Ham United also won three valuable points as Danny Ings scored his first goal for the club and the hosts scored four times in the second half to defeat rival Nottingham Forest 4-0 at London Stadium.
Everton returned to the top three after losing 2-0 at home to Aston Villa.
Liverpool could not recover from their midweek defeat to Real Madrid at Anfield in the Champions League, as they struggled to achieve a 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace, resulting in a move up one place in the table to seventh.
This was the first time Palace kept a clean sheet against Liverpool in 18 years.
Arsenal responded impressively to their home defeat to City with victories over Villa and Leicester.
In the first half, Leandro Trossard’s goal was cancelled out by VAR, but it was the Belgian who gave the pass that allowed Brazilian Martinelli to score in the 46th minute.
I had full faith that the players could do it, manager Mikel Arteta said of his team’s reaction.
I think defensively we were great today because we limited Leicester to one shot on target the whole game at home, and that’s very difficult to do.
Arsenal, claiming their first title since 2004, has 57 points from 24 games and City has 55 from 25.
After beating Arsenal, City lost momentum with a draw against Nottingham Forest and an away game against RB Leipzig in the Champions League midweek. But in the first half of the game against Bournemouth, they were again ruthless, scoring three times.
Julian Alvarez scored from the rebound when Haaland’s deflected shot hit the bar after 15 minutes.
The Norwegian then scored his 27th goal in the league just before the half-hour mark with a fairly simple strike, surpassing Sergio Agüero, who scored in 2014-15, to become City’s record holder for the most goals scored in a Premier League season.
Gabriel Martinelli brought Arsenal a 1-0 win over Leicester City that briefly put them five points ahead, but City responded with a 4-1 rout of struggling Bournemouth.snatched the three points on the brink of half-time, taking advantage of a miscued pass to make the score 3-0 with an accurate strike. ByAfter halftime, Chris Mepham’s goal made the score 4-0, and Jefferson Lerma scored on a volley, a late consolation for the hosts, who finished the day in the bottom three.
THE BATTLE FOR EXECUTION
The battle for relegation is getting especially intense this season, with clubs switching positions weekly.
Leeds haven’t won in the league since Nov. 5, but former Watford manager Gracia made an immediate impression.
It was Firpo who finally scored in the 77th minute in front of a raging crowd at Elland Road, deflecting a low shot from goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.
After 10 games without a win, the team needed it. It’s one step, but an important step, Gracia told Sky Sports.
West Ham’s home game against Forest seemed headed toward a goalless draw, but Ings, signed in January from Aston Villa, scored in the 70th minute off an assist from Jarrod Bowen past goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
Ings had to wait only three minutes for a second goal from a Saeed Benrahma pass before Declan Rice made the score 3-0 and substitute Michael Antonio completed the rout.
Everton’s hopes of avoiding relegation were dashed when Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Buendia scored goals for Villa.
Watkins scored from the penalty spot after John McGinn was sent off by Idrissa Gueye just after the hour mark, and Buendia completed Everton’s misadventures.
Southampton is in last place with 18 points from 24 games, Bournemouth and Everton have 21 points each. West Ham moved up to 16th place with 23 points and Leeds has 22.
